Yesterday was School of Rock, Part 2 – the drum workshop, hosted by Tim. He gave everyone a drum or cymbal and assigned everyone a beat. The youth were great sports and there were awesome results.
We also gave them a chance to record their own music. It was really impressive – many of the recordings were one take and it was quieter in the room than Sacrament meeting! Way to go!
Yesterday was the School of Rock workshop #1 with the youth in the Sunrise Meadows 1st Ward. As a fun project, Tim and I are hosting a music mini-series to give the youth all the necessary skills to play their favorite songs. We began with some basic music / chord theory on piano and broke down some popular music to show how simple the progressions are. We had them playing songs like “I’m Yours” by Jason Mraz, “CrushCrushCrush” by Paramore, “Vida La Vida” by Coldplay and “Apologize” by Timbaland by the end of the afternoon.
They then had a chance to showcase their works in progress and perform songs they were learning or writing for everyone in a supportive atmosphere. It was a blast! We have incredible talent in our neighborhood!
Next week, Tim is going to focus on rhythm and drumming – a great avenue for teenage aggression! – and then record the kids playing and singing afterwards. It’s going to be great!
In August, Tim and I are going to host a School of Rock mini-series for the youth in our ward. It’s going to be awesome and we’ve got a ton of musically inclined kids in our neighborhood. We can’t wait! (if ONLY Steven and Joe could be there though…)
