pioneer-handcart

During youth conference last summer, we went to a pioneer village outside of Logan, UT to learn more about the pioneer lifestyle.  At one of the stops, a lady dressed in pioneer garb showed us how to make cheese and said:

Pioneer men married women based on their cooking skills – NOT on their looks.

Last night as we were standing in line at the Lion House Restaurant on Temple Square, Brigham Young’s home, surrounded by pioneer memorabilia,  Tim remembered her comment and said:

That’s what ugly people say.  I don’t care what century you live in, you know when a woman looks good!  I don’t buy it cuz I didn’t buy it!

Yep, when we got married, I couldn’t really cook.  Case in point 🙂

Girls!  This Friday I have tickets to the Arbonne Road Tour at the Grand America in Salt Lake City where they are showcasing their new FC5 line. If you’re not familiar with Arbonne, it is a Swiss company that formulates skin, hair, make-up and baby products from fruits and vegetables, botanical products that are great for your skin.  I personally love Arbonne and their healthy products!

The Arbonne open house format Road Tour is going to be this Friday, March 27th from 4:00 – 10:00pm at the Grand America.  I have four other tickets – let me know if you’d like to join me and we can all carpool up together.  It will be a blast to have a girls night out, catch up, try some great products – plus, my friend Gayelynne is giving a free FC5 product just for coming to the event!  (check out the website at http://arbonnefc5.com to pick out a product)  They do need RSVPs so they can plan on enough food.  Let’s do this!  🙂

If you’re not familiar with etsy, it’s like ebay for girls, sans auctions.  Etsy embraces all things handmade and allows designers and entrepreneurs market their wares affordably.  So for the discerning fashionista that doesn’t want to show up to a party matching someone else, Etsy is for you!  Today I was browing the handmade clothing section on etsy and encountered some fabulous (and modest!) finds…

What is your closet coveting these days?

Miracles March 21, 2009

americas-next-top-model1As you may know, I recently applied for America’s Next Top Model – nope, haven’t heard back yet!  Applying alone was quite the feat.  Let me tell you, there were some miracles along the way.

Part of the application was to make a 3-min. intro video in lieu of an open call.  Luckily I have a friend, Alex, who is a pro behind the camera and he and his friend, Darin were able to help make the video on Saturday, giving just enough time to edit and get the video back on Monday.

Miracle #1 – By sending in a video application, I avoided the NYC America’s Next Top Model riots & subsequent open call cancellation

The submission deadline was Tuesday at midnight, so it was absolutely essential the package leave from UPS Monday in order to arrive on time.  The plan was I was going to meet with Alex at noon, get the DVD and take it straight to UPS to send it off.

Things didn’t go quite as planned.

The play by play of the stressful day…

  • Waiting for Alex at noon who is running behind
  • Realized I left some important things for my app back at the office that I need to go back for before going to UPS
  • Alex gets a speeding ticket.  We finally connect, I get the DVD and I rush back to the office for the missing docs
  • I review the application details and realize the swimsuit picture has to be FULL LENGTH… something my swimsuit photo is not
  • On the phone with Jessica from Molto Bella, frantically trying to choose a new photo.  She uploads another pic to her website to be downloaded & printed
  • I’m out of time on my lunch so call Chantelle from Zoom Concierge to delegate the picture printing to her
  • Watch the video and realize that it runs 3:30 — anything over 3 minutes is instantly disqualified
  • Get on the phone with Alex to make video editing arrangements.  He says I can pick up the newly edited vid from Darin’s after 4
  • (Meanwhile, the last pick-up for UPS in Utah county is in Highland at 5:30pm.  That’s a small window of time to pick up the video from the south part of the county, the new picture and hightail it up to Highland in the north part of the county.  At least there is a Plan B – UPS drop offs pick up at 6:30pm)
  • Leave work after 4 – it’s SNOWING. Praying as I drive through blizzard conditions that I won’t crash
  • Get to Darin’s at 4:30.  He’s still editing the new vid.  In second revision, he’s changing it to better catwalk footage – yay!  The image is a little wobbly, but it’s too late to fix that
  • Get on the phone with Chantelle to see if someone can pick up the new swimsuit photo for me – they can’t swing it, so I’ll have to pick it up myself
  • She calls Macey’s to follow up – they miscropped and have cut my head off in the picture.  Thankfully, they’ll have a new one ready in time for me to come by
  • Leave Provo with the new DVD at 5.  Hit bumper to bumper traffic outside Orem that practically persists until Pleasant Grove.  There goes the Highland UPS pick up…
  • Cursing myself for requesting the Macey’s in Pleasant Grove when I’d driven right past another Macey’s in Orem… should have just gone there…
  • Arrive at Macey’s in PG at 5:30.  The pic is printing.  Thankfully the gal behind the counter, Colette, is a delight and we are able to laugh about everything going wrong.  We agree, “You’re either really not supposed to do this, or really supposed to do this!”
  • Get the photo and leave at 5:45 to go to the UPS drop off in American Fork
  • I remember there is a UPS store right around the corner and decide to stop by and make sure I filled out the paperwork properly.  As I round the corner, there are two UPS trucks outside loading up!!! Phew!  So glad I picked the Macey’s in PG!  I leave the package with them.  It is out of my hands – at last!

Albert Einstein said, There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.

In the thick of it, everything went wrong.  Once it was all over and I had a chance to step back, I realized it was all an absolute miracle.

Miracle #2 – Alex was running late.  Had he not, I would have sent the DVD right away without watching it as planned.  Without watching it, I would have never realized it was too long = instant disqualification.

Miracle #3 – I forgot the labels at the office.  If I hadn’t, I wouldn’t have realized I was about to submit the wrong photo.

Miracle #4 – Since the video was too long and needed to be revised, we got the better catwalk footage.

Miracle #5 – UPS picked up from by the Macey’s in PG!!!  Able to get in my application on time!

The package arrived the next morning in Santa Monica, in time for the deadline.

I’m really grateful things went the way that they did, or else I would have automatically been disqualified.  I really had someone watching out for me upstairs.  Thank you!!!  Keep your fingers crossed…

It’s 1am and I am wide awake.

Stayed home from work today because I felt a sinus cold coming on and got 13 hours of sleep last night.  Plus napped for another several hours.  So really it’s no wonder why I can’t sleep…

What do you do when you can’t sleep?  Apparently I blog.
